-Most insurance plans require a prescription from a medical doctor to start phyiscal therapy. However Direct Access is now legal in New York State. Direct Access allows you to consult and be evaluated by a physical therapist without a physician prescription. After a thorough evaluation, a P.T. may instruct you to see a physician for further testing or may start your physical therapy treatments immediately. You must see a physician after 30 days or 10 visits, whichever comes first, if you are treated without a prescription and require further treatment. The goal of this legislation is to allow patients quicker access to physical therapy and hopefully accelerate their recovery. We advise you to contact your insurance company to ask if they will cover physical therapy services without a prescription. If they require a prescription then you may still use Direct Access, but must pay for your physical therapy out-of-pocket, even if you have insurance. Please call our office with questions.
